As the oldest castle in Taiwan, the Anping Castle
is also known as “Taiwan City”. Over the last few
centuries, it had been ruled by the Dutch people
and three generations of Jheng, Cheng-Gong. Therefore,
its appearance had some changes for the needs at
different times.
It was the first castle built by the Dutch in Taiwan
and was named Orande. After Jheng, Cheng-Gong ruled
Taiwan, he changed its name to Anping Town and made
it his city. When the Cinq Government took over
Taiwan, they changed it into a military base. Though
the castle has been renovated many times and its
military splendor has gone, its historical value
and historic status are ever replaceable. |

It was built in 1653 (Yongli 7th Year, Ming Dynasty)
by the Dutch people as a defense base and was named
Provintia. Today, we can still see remains of the
gate and fortress under the foundation of Wenchang
Pavilion. When General Fu, Kang-An successfully
suppressed the revolt led by Lin, Shuan-Wen in 1786
(Cianlong 51st Year, Cing Dynasty), Emperor Cianlong
granted nine tablets to honor the merit of General
Fu. These tablets are not placed in the south of
the foundation of Haishen Temple. The Bisiyuguei
tablet in Cekanlo is the most splendid and spectacular
stone tablet in Taiwan. |

Designed by Japanese Kutai Matsumoto during the Japanese
Colonization, the canal was completed in 1926. Over
the last 70 years or so, it has been part of the
everday life of people in Tainan City and has left
countless beautiful memories for them. It represents
the strongest regional awareness of locals. Unlike
other famous river systems, the Tainan Canal is
exclusively for the people of Tainan and has never
been forgotten by any Tainan citizen. |
